Kami has tried a number of times to break her engagement to high-powered Marcus Lockwood off. He is becoming increasingly vindictive towards her, but she can’t stick to her resolution when he turns on the charm every time she broaches the topic. His malice reaches a new level when he accuses her of conniving with Neil, his brother, to bring their father’s company into disrepute. As a result, Kami is temporarily suspended from duty. Or is she merely an incidental victim in his ploy to force Neil to resign?

Neil knocks on her door in the early hours of the morning, covered in soot. He explains that he is the prime suspect in a murder, and admits that he gave the police the slip. Kami is the only person who knows where he was at the time of crime, but Marcus is clearly involved again. Although she doesn’t understand what they are, she realizes that the stakes are higher than she had thought. Providing Neil with an alibi would only be a temporary solution, and she offers him refuge instead.

They discover Marcus’s motive, and it appears that Neil has inadvertently become a threat to his livelihood. The only way Kami can divert the police and Marcus’s attention away from Neil’s whereabouts is to keep to her normal daily routine, but it is not enough. She also needs to prove Neil’s innocence. It requires her to maintain a precarious balance between acting ignorant and revealing what she knows, and she flounders in the unfamiliar territory of deception.

It soon becomes clear that she can’t trust anyone, and Marcus considers murder a small price to pay if it will lead him to Neil.
